Background of the Study
The use of military interventions in peacekeeping has become a common strategy in conflict zones around the world, including Nigeria. In regions like Giwa LGA in Kaduna State, which has experienced recurring violence related to ethnic, religious, and political tensions, the military has been deployed to restore order and protect civilians. The Nigerian military has been involved in peacekeeping efforts in the region, particularly following violent clashes and insurgent activities by groups such as Boko Haram and Fulani herders.

Military peacekeeping is often a contentious approach, with supporters arguing that it is necessary to stabilize volatile regions, while critics claim that it can exacerbate violence and distrust between the military and local communities. In Giwa LGA, where the military has been actively engaged in peacekeeping, the effectiveness and impact of these interventions remain under-researched. This study seeks to evaluate the role of military interventions in peacekeeping efforts in Giwa LGA, examining the successes and challenges faced by the military in its peacekeeping operations.

Statement of the Problem
Military interventions have been central to peacekeeping efforts in Giwa LGA, but their impact on long-term peace and security is unclear. While the military’s presence may provide temporary relief and security, there are concerns about the sustainability of peace, the human rights implications, and the potential for further violence. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of military interventions in achieving peace and security in Giwa LGA, with a focus on their ability to address underlying causes of conflict and promote long-term peace.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of military interventions in peacekeeping efforts in Giwa LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of military peacekeeping on local perceptions of security and conflict resolution.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving the role of the military in peacekeeping in Giwa LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How effective have military interventions been in maintaining peace and security in Giwa LGA?

  2. What impact have military peacekeeping efforts had on local communities' perceptions of security and conflict resolution?

  3. What improvements can be made to military interventions to enhance their effectiveness in peacekeeping efforts in Giwa LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Military interventions in Giwa LGA have been effective in providing short-term peace and security but have not addressed the root causes of conflict.

  2. Military peacekeeping operations in Giwa LGA have led to improved perceptions of security among local communities.

  3. Improving coordination between military forces and local peacebuilding initiatives will enhance the effectiveness of military interventions in peacekeeping.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on military peacekeeping efforts in Giwa LGA, Kaduna State, between 2010 and 2025. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining confidential military data and the potential for biases in local perceptions of military actions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Peacekeeping: Efforts, often involving the military or international organizations, to prevent conflict or maintain peace in post-conflict or conflict-prone areas.
